Wieck, Department Head of Medieval and Renaissance Manuscripts and curator at The Morgan Library in New York, relates the story of the Visconti-Sforza tarot, the deck that served as the primary inspiration for Dior Haute Couture Spring-Summer 2021 by Maria Grazia Chiuri. Bearing the name of two of Milan’s most noble families, it was commissioned in the mid-15th century as a display of prestige, and its misassociation with the esoteric only arose centuries later. Exquisitely painted and colored, it was pioneering in its balanced inclusion of female figures.
