Sebastian Busto – Machines [Movement Recordings]

Tash’s Movement Recordings kicks off 2019 by welcoming Sebastian Busto to the label for his debut EP. Known for his pure progressive sound the Buenos Aires resident has become a favourite of Hernan Cattaneo and Nick Warren, having appeared in the sets of the legendary DJs on multiple occasions. The Argentinean artist also lays claim to an impressive discography, highlighted by releases on Sudbeat Music and The Soundgarden. Now making his much anticipated Movement Recordings debut, Sebastian presents his ‘Machines’ EP.

NuKreative – Manhattan [Magician On Duty]

Magician On Duty begins the new year by welcoming NuKreative back to the label for a new EP. The Australian duo first appeared on the US imprint in August of 2018 with their ‘Equanimity’ EP. Also laying claim to releases on Balance Music, Kindisch and The Purr, NuKreative now lands back on Magician On Duty with ‘Sketches In Time’.

NuKreative are much loved for their exploration of all things deep, intricate and emotive. We get two stunning creations here beginning with the title selection. Coming in with a smooth, nicely contoured groove. It is a deep, dubby and incredibly charming nine minute journey. Elegant motifs and wispy effects adorn a roomy framework; while exotic percussion and poignant concepts provide the perfect prelude to a final act of hazy harmonics and undulating grooves.

PREMIERE: Lucas Rodriguez – Flashback (Anton Borin Remix) [Specific Music]

What is an example of a flashback?
A flashback in a book or film is when the current plot is interrupted so that a scene which previously occurred can be shared with the reader. … Examples of Flashback:

1. In a story about a girl who is afraid of heights, there is a flashback to a time when she fell off of the top of a playground as a young child.

2. In a story about a man who acts strangely and rue, there is a flashback to a scene of war, in which this man was a soldier.

3. A story begins with a scene of a desolate, destroyed town, then flashes back to a time when the town was full of life and people.

Examples of Flashback in Literature and Film

1. Wuthering Heights begins and Cathy is dead. Much of the action in the story is a flashback from that point.

2. In The Outsiders, Johnny is nervous and always carries a knife. The novel flashes back at one point to let us know that Johnny was beaten up in the past, and now carries a knife with him.

3. In the children’s movie Up, the old man has a flashback as he remembers meeting his wife and marrying her, which helps us to better understand why he does not want to leave the house that they have shared.

4. Forrest Gump is a series of flashbacks. As Forrest meets new people, he sits down and tells them a story from his life.

PREMIERE: Subconscious Tales – Ramya [Subtales]

Subconscious Tales launches his new Subtales imprint with a two track artist EP. The Latvian producer has been relatively quiet this year with just an EP for Proton Music and a remix for Massive Harmony added to his discography. Not uncommon however, it’s essentially how the Valmiera resident’s career has gone and why the demand for his music has always been so high. Now starting his own imprint he showcases two of his latest studio creations ‘Ramya’ and ‘Evernia’.

The EP’s first selection ‘Ramya’ finds Subconscious Tales crafting a deep and sultry creation which sets the tone for the release. Meticulously produced, the piece begins with warm punchy beats, finely tuned drums and a wide array of wondrous effects. Groovy and haunting in equal measure, it’s a spiritual nine minute journey, showcasing heady motifs and astral designs, while a perfectly contoured low end keeps the journey pulsating with anticipation. As it’s fluid cadence builds so to does chromatic warmth, in the form of timely overlays, which continue to drive the narrative as clustered tones and layers of percussion saturate your senses.

The release concludes with ‘Evernia’ which is just as detailed and thus equally impressive. On a backbone of rugged bass stabs comes indistinct vocals, trippy designs and meditative arps. The clap really stands out, incredibly distinct and fresh sounding, it adds dynamic flair to what are quite psychedelic surroundings. Not without emotive moments, a shimmering overlay carries into the break for an interlude of effervescent warmth, perfectly setting up an otherworldly finale. It rounds out two incredibly creative cuts from Subconscious Tales, who has gotten his Subtales imprint off to a very auspicious start. Can’t wait to see what comes next. Highly recommended.

Gaston Ponte – Monochromatic [ICONYC Noir]

John Johnson’s ICONYC Noir rounds out a successful year by welcoming Gaston Ponte to the label for his debut EP. Tipped as one of Argentina’s top up and coming talents, progressive music tastemaker Hernan Cattaneo has been one of the first to sing his praises. Releases on Auditen Music, One Of A Kind, Soundteller Records and Stellar Fountain have all been well received, ultimately leading to his ICONYC Noir debut entitled ‘Monochromatic’.

Beginning with the title selection Gaston explores the smooth progressive sensibilities for which he’s become so loved. Warm, inviting and undeniably fluid, it’s a creation which quickly captures your imagination, pulsating with excellent cadence as airy effects, playful stabs and symphonic overlays further saturate your senses. Bursting with positive vibes the main break proves to be a highlight, with it’s processed pianos and creamy musicality advancing the narrative into a classic key changing finale.

The second selection ‘Mode On’ sits in a similar sonic space but comes off a touch darker and more percussive. It’s tight beats, firing rhythms and catchy hooks bring waves of energy early on. Layers of drums build around the groove as timely splashes and haunting pads carry into break. Smooth chord changes then bring a more emotive sensibility, elevating mood as charming motifs provide a tasteful peak before seguing into a gorgeous finale. The beauty of this one lies a bit under the surface, a very satisfying journey from Gaston.

Rounding out the release are the equally compelling lines of ‘Cover Me’. Although the BPM is the same as it’s predecessor this feels a touch pacier with a full driving groove playing a large roll in that. Intricate electronics and bubbly tones create a gorgeous flow while choppy percussion and charming melodies continue to advance the journey. Once again rooted by nostalgic chord changes, it’s the main break which brings this one all together. Positively glowing, it sits at the heart of piece, gently delivering goose bump worthy moments before a soaring finale rounds out the track and release in style. Gaston’s written some amazing progressive house this year and all three of these sit near the top of his best ever work. A great signing for John Johnson’s ICONYC Noir to cap off a memorable 2019. Highly recommended.
